April 2011LGS Latvia publish VFR eAIP using apsXML from Managed-AIS
Latvian ANSP LGS have published a world first – an electronic VFR AIP (VFR eAIP), using the apsXML eAIP production software from Managed-AIS. The new publication provides aeronautical information for pilots flying under visual flight rules in Latvia, in pdf and html format. This first in AIS follows on from Latvia’s publication of an eAIP in 2007, one of the first eAIPs published and a pioneer in making use of a direct connection to EAD data through the apsXML system.
Whilst the VFR eAIP is a first, it follows the publication of a pdf VFR Manual by Nav Portugal in 2010. The Portuguese VFR Manual is created and maintained using FrameAPS – the “unstructured” version of apsXML.
Andrew Barrett, Managed-AIS’ Managing Director, commented, “Working with the AIS team at LGS previously has taught us that they have pushed the boundaries and led the way in AIS provision in Europe and around the world. The VFR eAIP is the latest example of this. We would like to congratulate the Latvian AIS on their achievement. We are proud that they chose to use apsXML for this project.”
For more information on the Latvia VFR eAIP, visit https://ais.lgs.lv/.
apsXML is the world’s number one eAIP production software. The software supports the production of eAIP and other aeronautical documents with updatable AIXM data links, secure multiple user document storage and html and pdf previewing throughout the production process.
March 2011At the ATC Global event in Amsterdam, Managed-AIS launched Mobile AIP: an android app for reading aeronautical information publications (AIPs) on a smartphone.
Mobile AIP brings together two important technological developments – mobile internet and aeronautical information management.
AIM and mobile internet
The spread of mobile internet technology has meant that more people than ever before are accessing online resources using handheld devices such as mobile phones. Current predictions say that by the end of 2011, there will be a billion mobile internet users worldwide.
Aeronautical information management (AIM) was developed by EUROCONTROL and its international partners to ensure that aeronautical information was available in a timely fashion, taking advantage of modern technology.
Mobile AIP brings mobile internet and AIM together. Now the right place for aeronautical information is in the palm of your hand, wherever you are.
Make your AIP mobile
Are you an AIS provider? Mobile AIP is designed for displaying aeronautical information from any AIP system. Get in touch with us to find out about the benefits of Mobile AIP for AIS providers or check the Mobile AIP information on our website.
January 2011Managed-AIS Celebrate 5th Birthday
AIM software and services company Managed-AIS are celebrating their 5th birthday, 12th January 2011. The celebration marks five years since Managing Director Andrew Barrett led a management buyout of the AIS division of Mekon.
The buyout, arranged by agreement with Mekon's directors, led to the Mekon-AIS business unit becoming an independent company. In 2007, the company changed its name to its current form Managed-AIS.
Since the buyout, the company has achieved a number of significant milestones. Managed-AIS' eAIP production software apsXML is now the world's most widely used eAIP software, with fifty plus licenses in more than twenty five states around the world, including in the European AIS Database (EAD) project. Managed-AIS are also involved in the world's biggest eAIP project with Navcanada. Managed-AIS complete AIXM 5.1 research for EUROCONTROL
Aeronautical information specialists Managed-AIS have completed an AIXM 5.1 research project for EUROCONTROL, the European Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation. The project, carried out by Managed-AIS consultants in Edinburgh, provides a comprehensive mapping between the contents of the Integrated Aeronautical Information Package (IAIP) as defined by ICAO and the AIXM 5.1 specification. This mapping provides an important bridge between the traditional AIS outputs including AIP and NOTAM with the modern data environment of AIXM and provides a further proof of concept of the AIXM model.
2010
The world's largest eAIP software user group gather in Dublin
November saw the third gathering of the EAD eAIP Working Group, a gathering of eAIP editors using apsXML, the EAD's eAIP production tool. Eighteen participants from eleven organisations attended the working group meeting. In total, twenty national organisations use the EAD's eAIP production system, apsXML from Managed-AIS (M-AIS). The event was organised by EUROCONTROL and hosted by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).
The working group meeting watched presentations from M-AIS, IAA and EUROCONTROL covering the new features of the software and the support available for migrating to the eAIP. The eAIP editors also had their chance to make suggests on the future development of the software and share best practices with their peers.
Participants at all stages of their migration to the eAIP were present in Dublin: states planning their migration; states already undergoing migration and states maintaining a published eAIP. The event was the third EAD eAIP working group meeting, following successful meetings in Latvia in 2008 and Malta in 2009.
Managed-AIS welcome new clients for eAIP training
Trainees from Jordan, Lithuania and Moldova came to Edinburgh, UK to attend eAIP software training with Managed-AIS (M-AIS). The two week course gave the three new users of the EAD eAIP production system an opportunity to learn about the features of the apsXML software.
After the conclusion of the course, the attendees received a short presentation on the software's latest features and assistance available in migrating to the eAIP. The presentation was a summary of content from the EAD's eAIP production working group, held in Dublin earlier in November.
The course included training in the structured FrameMaker interface as well as apsXML's custom aeronautical tools. These tools include the insertion of AIXM data into eAIP documents and the ability to preview html and pdf for pages or documents at all stages of the production cycle. The trainees were joined in the second week by an attendee from Malta, whose AIP was converted to an eAIP by M-AIS in early 2010.
The all female course attendees were trained at M-AIS' training facility in the heart of Edinburgh's historic New Town world heritage site. Paul Wilbraham, M-AIS' Senior Trainer with over twenty years training experience, led the course. The training was organised by GroupEAD, the official training provider for the European AIS Database (EAD).
Jordan, Lithuania and Moldova all joined as new users of the EAD eAIP system in 2010, bringing the number of organisations using the apsXML software to twenty.
Lithuania chose Managed-AIS eAIP production software
Lithuanian ANSP Oro Navigacija have chosen the apsXML software from Managed-AIS (M-AIS) for eAIP production. They join eighteen other states using the software, which is the European AIS Database (EAD) tool for eAIP. apsXML is the world's most widely used eAIP software, with users on five continents.
The software provides a supportive working environment for AIP editors to create and manage an electronic AIP (eAIP) which meets ICAO requirements and is compliant with the EUROCONTROL eAIP DTD. Editing is carried out in side by side page view and XML view windows with tips and other guidance to help the editor along. There is a full set of tools for previewing any part of the eAIP in pdf or html and EAD SDO data can be included in the eAIP as ICAO format tables or text data links.
The latest version of apsXML for the EAD is Release 5 Extension 4, which includes an upgrade to version 1.10 of the eAIP DTD, improved data searching and improved tools for handling AIP charts.
M-AIS deliver their latest upgrade to EAD eAIP tools
Managed-AIS' latest contribution to update the EAD system has passed pre-delivery testing by EUROCONTROL with flying colours. The Release 5 extension 4 (R5E4) added fourteen changes to the apsXML eAIP software, including eleven functional enhancements.
The changes include:
Upgrading to version 1.1 of the eAIP DTD
Previewing HTML for an individual eAIP file (e.g. GEN 1.1)
Previewing eSupplements and eAICs
Improved linking to chart files
Improved linking to external URLs
An automated tool for EDD management
Improved search tools for AIXM tables and data link insertion
Scaling improvements
Improvements to IDs and cross-references
All fourteen changes have been verified by EUROCONTROL and the EAD.
The EAD's rigorous release schedule ensures that aspXML, the EAD eAIP solution, continues to move ahead with a release every four months and a major release every eighteen months. Keeping the quality of the software high for each release is particularly important and M-AIS' development team consistently achieve this with the help of the company's dedicated testing department.
Sandra Cunningham, M-AIS Software Development Manager welcomed the news, saying, "We are very proud of the team, they have worked very hard to bring some significant changes to the software. We look forward to hearing feedback from the software users. "
There are currently 53 licensed users of apsXML through the EAD, in over twenty countries.
UK aeronautical information specialists Managed-AIS have joined as corporate members of IFAIMA, the International Federation of Aeronautical Information Management Associations.
Managed-AIS' application for membership was approved at IFAIMA's 3rd General Assembly, held in Beijing, China to coincide with the Global AIM Congress 2010. A representative from the company attended the assembly.
"We are proud to join IFAIMA, an organisation with a vital role to play in the AIM sector", said Andrew Barrett, Managing Director of Managed-AIS. "We look forward to helping them in achieving their AIM objectives and continuing to participate in the global AIM community."
Moldova chose apsXML from Managed-AIS for eAIP production
Moldovan ANSP Moldatsa have chosen apsXML, the world's most widely used eAIP software. The decision came after discussions with Managed-AIS, the UK based aeronautical information specialists behind apsXML. The apsXML tool provides the eAIP and AIP production subsystem for the European AIS Database (EAD) and is already in use by seventeen other EAD states.
Moldova were amongst the first group of states to successfully publish an eAIP and will now move their production onto apsXML. Using the EAD eAIP production tool has a number of advantages for a state:
Fully integrated with other EAD systems
Use AIXM data in eAIP
Publish eAIP pdf and html directly to PAMS
Safe database storage of eAIP working files
Lower entry cost for existing EAD users than standalone eAIP systems
Regular software updates and improvements, including a major release every eighteen months
Full support available for training, migration from existing systems and software supply
High quality support through the EAD Service Desk
Software quality supervised by EUROCONTROL
An established eAIP tool user community with annual user days to share best practice
The users of the EAD eAIP subsystem already own over fifty licenses of apsXML. Hungary, Latvia and Portugal currently use the system to publish and maintain their eAIP and a further nine clients are expecting to publish eAIPs on the system in 2010. This includes three clients who benefitted from M-AIS consultants performing the conversion from original documents to the new eAIP. The most recent of these projects was Malta, whose AIP was converted to an eAIP at the beginning of this year.
Portugal publish VFR Manual using FrameAPS from Managed-AIS
Portuguese ANSP Nav Portugal have published a new AIS publication for VFR flights, using the FrameAPS aeronautical publishing software from Managed-AIS. Users can access the bilingual manual online at http://www.nav.pt/ais , by CD or in published (paper) form. Updates to the VFR Manual will be provided by means of amendments.
The VFR Manual has been developed using FrameAPS, an aeronautical publishing tool which provides aeronautical editors with alll they need to create, manage and publish a range of aeronautical documents including AIPs, VFR Manuals and Manuals of Air Traffic Services. FrameAPS stores the working documents in a document database, allowing multiple users to work on the same publication simultaneously. Additionally, users can support their standard document creation processes through the addition of AIXM data in the form of auto generated tables and text data links.
Nav Portugal's VFR Manual is published in addition to their eAIP, published using the EAD AIP production tool apsXML, provided by Managed-AIS. apsXML is the world's leading software tool for electronic AIP production.
The work has drawn on the company's expertise in AIP, AIS and AIXM and previous projects in mapping between AIXM formats, including mapping AIXM 3.3 to 4.5. The resources created will be used by EUROCONTROL in their AIM activities, including the European AIS Database project, where Managed-AIS provide the eAIP production subsystem. Additionally, the information gathered during the project will play a part in assisting European states with their Aeronautical Data Quality (ADQ) requirements.
In addition to drawing on the data modelling tools used in previous AIXM projects, the project team used the DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) standard to ensure the easy display and re-use of the information produced. This has also allowed the project deliverables to be made available in a variety of formats.
Andrew Barrett, Managing Director of the company said "M-AIS are very pleased to have delivered this project on-time and within budget for Eurocontrol. It was a complex mapping across many domains which generated thousands of pages of linked XHTML and RTF content. The mix of AIXM XML Mapping, AIM Domain Knowledge, Java and DITA based output suited our skill set perfectly and we were able to work well with the team at Eurocontrol with minimal supervision".
